We are no longer accepting donations on this campaign, but there are other ways for you to support us today!

I'll never forget the morning of June 28.

The phone rang early. A four-month-old puppy had been found with his throat slashed three times. He'd been abandoned, left to suffer and die. SPCA of Southwest Michigan's medical team rushed him into life-saving surgery, but he wasn't out of the woods. He underwent multiple surgeries and was treated for parvo virus in the next several days, so he could fully recover and have the quality of life he deserved. We named him Lazarus and after weeks in recovery he was placed in a loving home.

All of this was possible because of people like you. People who make an early-morning phone call when they see an animal in need. People who give a donation that enables us to staff our clinic with a skilled medical team and pay for the facilities, equipment, and medicine the animals in our care need. People who open their hearts and homes to animals who need them.

WHO WE ARE. Established in 2002, SPCA of Southwest Michigan is a nonprofit no-kill animal shelter.

WHAT WE DO. We save animals. SPCA of Southwest Michigan is dedicated to working for the well-being of animals and creating an adoption-focused community. We work to end senseless animal euthanasia in our community and provide animals with loving homes.

HOW WE DO IT. We take in animals at risk of being euthanized at an animal control facility or, like Lazarus, those who need emergency care and shelter. We only take animals when we have space, which enables us to provide each one with the medical care, enrichment, and socialization they need to be happy and healthy. Each animal's welfare is our priority.

Animal welfare goes beyond saving those that need help now, so we also have prevention-focused programs and initiatives. We educate people about what it means to be a pet owner, share information about the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation, provide pet food to local food banks, offer temporary pet housing resources for the elderly, and more.

HOW YOU CAN HELP. Simply put, you can give. We are grateful for your gifts of time and talent — let's face it, we couldn't do what we do without our volunteers — but monetary donations are critical. We depend on private donations from people like you. We don't receive funding from a national organization. We don't get government funding. Adoption fees help cover some of our expenses — mostly the cost of medical services that range from basic vaccinations to life-saving surgeries — but not everything.

WAYS TO GIVE. There are a variety of ways to give to SPCA of Southwest Michigan. You can:

  • Give online at spcaswmich.networkforgood.com. You choose the amount and whether you
  • want to make a one-time or recurring gift.

  • you to give more than you ever thought possible. Contact me to learn more about this exciting way to give. My contact information is at the end of this letter.

These aren't the only ways to give. Visit spcaswmich.org/donate for even more options.

WHY US? SPCA of Southwest Michigan has a proven record of success. Since 2002 we've saved more than 16,000 animals. In both 2016 and 2017 we received the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance Award, which recognizes organizations for their exceptional work to save animal lives. We also hold a Silver Seal of Transparency from GuideStar, the world's largest source of information on nonprofit organizations.

When you give to the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, you are ensuring that animals — like Lazarus — in our community get the shelter, food, enrichment, and emergency and routine medical care they need. You're also helping us educate people in order to create an adoption-focused community and prevent animals from ever needing us in the future.

Once again, it's very simple. There are many ways for you to be part of our work, but your financial support is critical. In this season of giving, please consider giving to SPCA of Southwest Michigan.

On behalf of all of us at SPCA of Southwest Michigan, we are humbled by and grateful for your support.

    Thank you.
